Is it hard to learn German or French by yourself?

I've tried teaching myself French and it was very hard. I did not like it. Understanding it was no problem, but speaking it was. It's one of those languages where you need the accent to speak it properly. I took French in school when I first started and the teacher focused her attention on me because I was getting the accent best.
