7 month old, has cough and flem?

my 7 month old has a real bad cough, running nose and flem. Because of his age, is doctor did not prescribe him with any medication for his cough and runny nose. He recommended putting him on a breathing treatment but i feel bad seeing my baby on that machine three times a day. Is there anything else I can do at home to ease and help him with the flem and cough? I do the baby rub day and night. Anything else that someone might recommend that would help??? I am desperate to help my baby get rid of that cough, flem and runny nose :(
