Can you smoke roll up tobacco in a shisha pipe?

I love the taste of tobacco however I am finding that I am always coughing up flem and having a sour throat when I smoke it in a roll up. My father tells me that the water in the shisha pipe filters the nicotine out while smoking. So is it possible to smoke roll up tobacco in a shisha pipe and still enjoy the taste of the tobacco?
